SPOILERS:
REALLY. I’M SPOILING THIS.
SPOILERS.
I TOLD YOU.
SPOILERS.
A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness is a 2016 YA fantasy novel with illustrations that I enjoyed until I found out the monster was cancer and Conor’s mom dies.
I really don’t know where I thought the novel was going, but I still was super bummed by the ending.
A monster shows up every day at 12:07 AM or PM to tell Conor stories. The monster tells Conor four separate stories. Or Conor helps tell them. I don’t remember.
I really thought it was going to be better. I really thought it was going to be more compelling.
It wasn’t bad, exactly. It was well written and the illustrations were awesome. I really liked the illustrations. But the book itself was billed to me as scary, and it wasn’t. It was just depressing.
MEH.
